Thousands and thousands of square miles of terrain. Of course I'm generally a critic of pure open world game design like the TES series has, but if you're going to do it, at least really do it, as Bethesda did in Daggerfall. The scale of the gameworld is just so ridiculously unbelievable that it makes immersion much more difficult when it takes five minutes to walk from one city to the next. I know that they do it so they can directly design everything instead of having everything be random and generic like TES I and II, but even so, they suffer in comparison anyway.

one big problem with TES III and IV is that for "huge open world" games, the worlds sure are small. A couple of mountains, a large lake, some plains. but then you look at your map, and realize that those mountains in the distance (with see-farther mods installed) are the edge of the world. If you become impatient with the NWN2 OC you can safely skip it and go straight into the expansion.Īt first, you may be impressed. It's *very* well written, it's beautiful, it gives you real decisions to make, and its NPC companions have more depth and compelling personalities than anything since BG2 and Torment.

It's the spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment in many ways, and it's substantial enough (~30 hours) and different enough from the OC that you can consider it a separate full game. The Mask of the Betrayer NWN2 expansion pack is just plain amazing. The OC is recommended if you're patient enough to get to the good stuff. The NWN2 OC is uneven, with its tedious linear NWN1-like elements frontloaded to Act 1, after which it opens up to much more interesting scenarios and non-linear stronghold building elements. NWN2 Gold comes with the NWN2 Original Campaign and the Mask of the Betrayer expansion. Still, I think I've played it for at least 80 hours total over multiple playthroughs (with and without mods), so there's something to be said for that. Mods can address most of the treadmill aspects of it, heavily modifying the leveled list stuff, fixing the level up system, etc., but personally I don't think 500 mods are enough to *really* fix it.
